You Won’t Believe How Close The Witcher 3 Came to Being a Linear, Forgettable RPG

There’s no denying the fact that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is one of the best RPGs we’ve ever seen. It’s been a decade since the release of the game, and the conversations surrounding it have never faded.

The third installment in Geralt’s saga continues to be enjoyed by the gaming community as they simply can’t get enough of the incredible story of Geralt’s quest to find Ciri. However, you’ll be shocked to know how close CD Projekt Red was to making this masterpiece yet another linear and boring RPG.

CD Projekt Red didn’t want to settle for less in The Witcher 3

The year 2012 was quite a special one for CD Projekt Red. It was preparing to release The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings on Xbox 360, and the work on the follow-up, The Witcher 3, had also kicked off in secret. The Witcher 2 was quite a big critical and commercial success that brought us interesting characters and a unique storyline.

Any other developer out there (looking at you, Bethesda) would’ve stuck to the formula that worked in the past and built upon that. Many in the gaming community expected the same with The Witcher 3, but CD Projekt Red is not your average Joe. As stated by one of the quest designers (via GamesRadar+), the studio wanted to bring The Witcher 2‘s character-driven narrative into a sprawling open world.

Everyone in the industry said it’s not possible – that these things don’t go together, because you almost have contradictory objectives for what you’re trying to achieve.

However, the gaming industry experts stated that it’s simply impossible to combine both of these aspects. Strong storytelling often requires linearity, but open-world games focus on exploration. They felt that these opposite goals wouldn’t work out for the PRG, and it would be a massive disaster upon release.

CD Projekt Red wasn’t going to give up on its dream like that. Despite the scrutiny, its ambition to combine a character-driven narrative with an open world ultimately gave us an RPG that has gone down in the history books. Seriously, hats off to CD Projekt Red for daring to innovate and step out of its comfort zone, as it’s something that modern gaming developers do their best to avoid.

The Witcher 3 might be getting more DLCs in the future

Well, if you’re someone who’s been hoping to see more DLCs for The Witcher 3, you might be in luck. Podcasters Rock and Boris have reported that CD Projekt is planning to drop a third DLC for The Witcher 3.

Apparently, CD Projekt Red’s plans for the future include a project that might be a story DLC crafted with the help of developer Fool’s Theory. Although we haven’t received any specific plot details for the game, the podcasters stated that several sources had confirmed the project’s existence.

The podcasters also gave us a timeline for the upcoming releases by CD Projekt Red. We could see the alleged DLC arrive before the highly anticipated releases of The Witcher 4 and The Witcher 1 remake.

However, it’s crucial to take this information with a grain of salt as CD Projekt Red still hasn’t announced anything officially.
