WWE Just Missed the Perfect Opportunity to Build Golderg’s Retirement Match Ahead of Night of Champions

For a while now, Goldberg’s farewell has been a boiling point in WWE. Time and time again, The Myth has teased his return to WWE for one final time before hanging up his boots once and for all. However, it is yet to be seen when he finally returns. The man who revolutionised WCW with a streak that needed an electric shock to be eventually broken by Diesel, ran riot in his heyday at WCW and then took it up a notch in WWE as well.

His iconic match-up with Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania 20, with Stone Cold Steve Austin as the referee was quite the talk of the town. However, he took a long hiatus from the company and eventually returned to WWE in 2016, winning the WWE Universal Championship first in 2017 and then in 2020. It was in 2018 that he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame for his endless contributions to the company.

WWE might have lost a fine chance to make Goldberg and Gunther happen as the former’s swansong

In the latest episode of WWE RAW, Gunther was involved in a title bout with one of his biggest foes in recent times, Jey Uso. After what was an oscillating battle, swinging fiercely like a pendulum, it was The Ring General who secured a win to reclaim the World Heavyweight Championship via a sleeper hold.

With the World Heavyweight Championship around his waist, Gunther was once again reigning supreme. As per inside reports, this match was not supposed to be a two-way show, as there were high chances of Goldberg making his appearance. However, something changed at the last moment and the storyline took off in its own sweet way with The Ring General reclaiming his title.

Talking in the CarCast Podcast earlier, Goldberg revealed that he is well aware of when his final match is going to be. He also shed some light on what his preparations are at the moment. Now, with the prospect of a final match comes the question of who’s next? The answer was probably given a long time back when Gunther attacked Goldberg’s family verbally. In Bad Blood 2024, Goldberg was being called out by Gunther in front of his family and he was not taking any bit of that insult.

As the reports suggest, Goldberg was supposed to turn up in the latest episode of WWE RAW. However, he didn’t turn up; that part wasn’t clear, to be honest. If it was a change in WWE’s programming that led to his no-show or Goldberg himself was stuck in other obligations, that remains obscured. Had Goldberg turned up, then he could have actually cost The Ring General his latest title run, thereby leading to an intense feud.

It is still not clear when Goldberg will return to WWE to start promoting his final match, if there is one. However, with every succeeding day, the wait gets longer enough, and that might just kill the intensity of what can be a potential full-blown farewell for Goldberg. Reports also state that this hallowed match-up might happen at WWE Summerslam, one of the biggest PLEs of the Stamford-based company, however, there aren’t any clear reports of the same.

What can Goldberg vs Gunther shape up to be?

Earlier in WWE, there have been countless times when the company has hosted matches pitting superstars of two different generations. When Hulk Hogan’s nWo came into being, they were quite a force against the rising sensations. The arrival of Nexus in its wee days also saw the stable attacking established superstars.

Talking on the Ariel Helwani Podcast, Goldberg touted Gunther to be one of the new generation while he hailed himself as one from the old generation. He deemed that the potential match-up between the two could also act as the passing of the torch.

However, Goldberg was clear about the fact that despite this being a generational war, there would be no warmth. This would only be a full-blown rivalry, pitting two famished superstars, Gunther with his arrogance, and Goldberg protecting his pride and his family from the clutches of the vice Ring General.
