It’s fair to say that the Xbox brand has had an interesting year so far, with the launch of Elder Scrolls VI: Oblivion Remastered and several Microsoft-published games selling like hot pancakes on PlayStation. The future of Xbox may be unclear, but today’s Xbox Games Showcase gave us a solid look into what’s to come for Microsoft’s first-party studios and partners.
Microsoft’s hunger for studio acquisitions meant that we received a ton of game announcements at the showcase. However, what truly caught the eyes of players is undoubtedly The Outer Worlds 2. From the early looks, it seems like Obsidian Entertainment is tired of Todd Howard’s shenanigans and has decided to release its own take on the highly anticipated Fallout 5.
The Outer Worlds 2 is really just Fallout 5 without the name
We already know that Bethesda is working hard on Elder Scrolls 6, and the title is not expected to hit the shelves before 2026 at the earliest. Howard has already confirmed that work on Fallout 5 won’t begin until the Elder Scrolls title is wrapped, which means we’re looking at a 2030s release window for the post-apocalyptic game.
However, Obsidian Entertainment isn’t having any of this. The studio has dropped a brand-new trailer for its anticipated The Outer Worlds 2 at the Xbox Games Showcase 2025. If you’re unaware, this is a sequel to one of 2019’s best RPGs, The Outer Worlds, which snatched awards left and right after its release.
The Outer Worlds 2 is really an adventure into capitalism by capitalism. As showcased in the trailer, you’ll step into the shoes of an Earth Directorate agent who has found themselves on the planet Arcadia. The destiny of the entire galaxy hinges upon your choices, abilities, companions, and the alliances you choose to form.
Of course, we’ll see a return of the capitalism themes from the first entry, and they’re going to play an even bigger role this time. On top of this, we’ll get new combat mechanics, weapons, and bizarre creatures.
There’s everything in The Outer Worlds 2 you’d expect from a Fallout game. Right from corporate dystopia to dark humor, it’s a perfect mirror of the post-apocalyptic franchise. Will the RPG match the success of Bethesda’s iconic franchise? Only time will tell us.
When is The Outer Worlds 2 coming out?
Well, if you’re excited to jump into The Outer Worlds 2, you won’t have to wait long. It’s been confirmed at the Xbox Games Showcase that The Outer Worlds 2 is all set to release on October 29th, 2025, for Xbox Series S/X, PC, and PS5. That’s right, unlike Sony, Microsoft isn’t afraid to share its games with rival platforms.
Obviously, The Outer Worlds 2 will also be a day-one release for the Xbox Game Pass service. It’s going to be interesting to see how well the RPG ends up performing, as Obsidian has had a strong year so far.
The developer released Avowed earlier in the year, and while there were certain hiccups, the RPG proved to be a smash hit. That’s not all, though, as rumors suggest that Obsidian is also working on yet another Fallout game.
