The New Ryu Ga Gotoku Game Might Be Hiding Its Biggest Surprise in Plain Sight

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has given us a number of legendary franchises, such as Yakuza and Like a Dragon. However, the studio finally lifted the wraps on its next game at the Summer Games Fest 2025 called Stranger Than Heaven with a cinematic trailer.

Stranger Than Heaven has been in development for a while. Previously, the title was introduced as Project Century at The Game Awards 2024. Fans can’t wait to see what Ryu Ga Gotoku brings to the table, as they believe that the game will bring a storyline that tackles various time periods.

Ryu Ga Gotoku might be planning a big twist in Stranger Than Heaven

If you revisit the first trailer we received for Project Century back during The Game Awards 2024, you’ll notice a few things. The game is set in Japan around the year 1915. The trailer kicks off with a classic black-and-white presentation that slowly shifts toward vivid colors, showcasing the technological evolution of the era.

However, the fresh trailer we’ve been treated to at the Summer Games Fest paints a completely different picture. It’s set in the neon-lit streets of Japan, nearly a 30-year jump from the trailer we saw at The Game Awards 2024. Ryu Ga Gotoku hasn’t explained this jump between the trailers, but the community has its own theory.

Stranger Than Heaven is believed to allow players to jump between different time periods while exploring the dense localities of Japan. Some parts of the game may unfold in 1915, and others could be set in 1943. Few suggest that the game is not going to span just a few decades but an entire century because it was initially called Project Century.

There’s no doubt that Ryu Ga Gotoku is planning to bring a complex narrative in Stranger Than Heaven that keeps players right at the edge of their seats. Will it live up to expectations and finally become another hit for the studio? Only time will tell.

When is Stranger Than Heaven releasing?

If you can’t wait to see what the developers are cooking in terms of narrative for Stranger Than Heaven, you might have to wait a bit. Currently, the game doesn’t have a release date or window.

Many had hoped that a vague hint at the release date could come after the Summer Games Fest trailers, but we didn’t receive any. Clearly, there’s still tons of work that needs to be done on the action game.

So, don’t expect Stranger Than Heaven to hit the shelves before 2026 at the earliest. Considering how tedious modern video game development can prove to be, there’s a chance that the title might be pushed back.

If we take a look at the history of Yakuza games, we can expect the upcoming game to be available on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. From the trailers, it’s clear that the game is graphically intense, so a Nintendo Switch 2 release might not be on the cards.
