So… it’s confirmed that MCU star Chris Evans, who portrayed the role of Captain America for 9 years, will not be coming back to the MCU. Although the reports are still unclear, as some say that he will return while others say he won’t, his co-star gave some clarity on the situation.
Anthony Mackie, who has essentially donned the role of the new Captain America in the MCU, was recently asked about his thoughts behind the alleged report that Chris Evans was set to return. Mackie… wasn’t too sure about the report.
Anthony Mackie says that Chris Evans is “happily retired.”
Sitting down for a quick chat with an interviewer, Anthony Mackie lounged casually as he talked about Captain America: Brave New World, the MCU, and how his co-stars had been doing.

Although Marvel is known for keeping their secrets close to the heart, they often end up spoiling stuff inadvertently (just look at Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man: No Way Home). When a report came on the internet that Chris Evans was going to return as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, it did seem weird to some people.
When Mackie sat down for a profile chat with Esquire, the actor was asked about Evans’s potential return to the role of Captain America. As usual, Mackie reported that Evans is happily retired, and that’s what the Materialists star has told him, too.
I didn’t know! I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then. At least, he didn’t tell me it was on the table, because I asked him. I was like, ‘You know, they said they’re bringing everyone back for the movie. Are you coming back?’
He continued,
That’s not true, though. his always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years—ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no — happily retired!
So it seems confirmed that, unfortunately, Chris Evans will probably not ever return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future. Maybe when he is old, the actor might like to don the Captain America shield, one last time, and if there’s someone that he should be thankful for the role of Captain America in the MCU, it would be Iron Man, star Robert Downey Jr.
Robert Downey Jr. got Chris Evans into the MCU.
When the Knives Out actor was initially approached for the role of Captain America in Captain America: The First Avenger, Evans was asked to sign a contract that essentially that he would work through the entirety of his character’s arc in the MCU.

In an interview, Evans and Dakota Johnson sat down with ScreenRant to promote their upcoming film Materialists. During their talks, Evans was asked about who made him feel valuable in Hollywood. Surprisingly, the actor went on to name his MCU co-star Robert Downey Jr. as the answer.
I might even say Downey. I made movies for 10 years prior to jumping onto [MCU]. He was the one who kind of talked me into it. I didn’t want to take the role. I said ‘no’ a few times, and he was the one who kind of gave the nudge.
If we had Chris Evans as Captain America, it was all thanks to Robert Downey Jr. motivating his friend to take up the role, even though he had some commitment issues with the project.
The rest, as we know, is history. Evans portrayed the role diligently for 9 years until his character retired in Avengers: Endgame. As per Mackie’s talks, the actor will not be returning to the MCU anytime soon, or is he returning in Avengers: Doomsday, and they want to keep it hidden?
Avengers: Doomsday is set for a release date of 18 December 2026 in theaters (USA).
