Robert Rodriguez Tricked Salma Hayek Into Doing a Shocking Scene in Quentin Tarantino’s 13%-Rated Film

Actress Salma Hayek started her career on Mexican television and later emerged as one of the most popular leading ladies in commercial cinema. She has been a frequent collaborator of both Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, appearing in one of the duo’s worst-reviewed movies.

During an interview, Hayek talked about appearing in the 1995 anthology movie Four Rooms, which features segments directed by Rodriguez and Tarantino. Hayek admitted that she was practically tricked into appearing in the 13%-rated movie. Here is what the actress had to say about her brief but shocking scene in the disaster.

Salma Hayek revealed how Robert Rodriguez tricked her into appearing in Quentin Tarantino’s Four Rooms

Salma Hayek rose to prominence during the 1990s, following her work in Mexican television. She starred in Robert Rodriguez‘s 1994 TV movie Roadracers, before gaining wider recognition for her role in the director’s 1995 neo-Western Desperado.

The same year, Hayek also appeared in Rodriguez’s segment of the anthology movie Four Rooms, which also featured a different segment directed by Quentin Tarantino. It features Hayek as a TV str***er in a brief scene, after Rodriguez could not find an ideal actress for the part.

During an interview with GQ, Hayek revealed that the director reached out to her after auditioning several str***ers who were too saucy for the scene.

I’m like, ‘Why are you doing this to me? I’ve never done that before. I don’t know how to do it,’ And he goes, ‘That’s why I want you.’

Hayek made the above statement, explaining that Rodriguez had called her early in the morning and requested her to come to the set to film a small part in his new movie. However, when the After the Sunset actress arrived on set, she realized she had been tricked into playing a str***er.

Although the role was small, Hayek was concerned about playing a str***er since she had never done anything like it. However, she was convinced by Rodriguez since he wanted the scene to be tasteful as it was to be viewed by children in the movie.

In the same conversation, Hayek admitted that she was extremely ill-prepared while filming the scene for the movie, which ended up as a commercial disaster. The movie received mostly negative reviews, and currently holds a critics’ score of 13% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the movie’s poor reception, it gave Quentin Tarantino the idea for Hayek’s character in From Dusk till Dawn, which was written by the former and directed by Rodriguez.

Hayek made the following statement, revealing the connection between her two collaborations with the director duo.

But, anyway, Quentin saw it. And that’s where he got the idea to write Santanico Pandemonium.

Hayek added that Tarantino got the idea of casting her as Santanico Pandemonium in the 1996 movie after seeing her ill-prepared str***er role in Four Rooms. Thankfully, From Dusk Till Dawn emerged as a commercial success despite mixed reviews, ending the anecdote on a positive note for the trio.

Four Rooms can be rented on Amazon Prime Video (USA).
