During the Xbox Games Showcase’s live streaming, Phil Spencer made a comment that added fuel to the rumors of a returning Halo game. While there is no official confirmation on an upcoming title, it makes the most sense, especially when we hear the words “classic.”
The most probable reason for this is that next year marks 25 years since the first Xbox console arrived on the market. And guess what? It also marks the 25th anniversary since the first Halo game, Combat Evolved, was released. From what it seems, the golden period for Xbox games might possibly come next year.
A Halo: Combat Evolved remake might come out next year
During the Xbox Games Showcase, Phil Spencer took over the microphone briefly, during which he made some important announcements. Spencer said it loud and clear that in 2026, fans will get to experience sequels to some of the beloved Xbox titles. This includes some popular names like Forza Horizon, Gears of War: E-Day, and a possible Halo: Combat Evolved remake. Here’s what Spencer said:
I am excited to share that players will get to celebrate 25 years of Xbox with a new fable – The next Forza, Gears of War: E Day, and the return of a classic that’s been with us since the beginning.
Why Halo, you ask? The rumors of a Halo: Combat Evolved remake were spreading like wildfire earlier this year. However, there was no substantial evidence found, so the rumors were ultimately shut down. With Spencer’s comment during the showcase, it’s safe to speculate that 2026 is when you can expect a Halo remake to come out.
The remake of the first game in the series will most likely attract a lot of new eyeballs, along with longtime fans. This is because 343 Industries (the developers of Halo) went through a major change, as they renamed the production house to Halo Studios.
What’s more interesting is that the developers also announced that all of their upcoming projects will use Unreal Engine 5 for production. Quite literally, a Halo: Combat Evolved remake can change everything for the franchise.
Reasons to expect a new Halo game in 2026
Last year, Halo Studios uploaded a video on their YouTube channel, explaining how they are planning to change the recipe for how they create games. In short, they announced the Unreal Engine-powered projects. In this video, they have also shared some stills from Halo: Combat Evolved rendered in Unreal Engine 5.
Apart from this, there are also rumors about an entirely different Halo project, currently being developed at Certain Affinity. From what the rumors are suggesting, this project is named Project Ekur.
This information was presented by a prominent leaker called Rebs Gaming. According to this guy, Project Ekur is going to be a multiplayer game, most likely a battle royale or extraction-based game.
Getting either of the above-rumored titles would be great for the fans. Reviving the franchise before Helldivers 2 overtakes Halo would be a great move.
