After three seasons — and three losses in the Western Conference Final — the Dallas Stars fired Pete DeBoer on Friday. Despite a sparkling regular season record, the veteran bench boss was unable to get the squad over the hump in the postseason. The way he threw Jake Oettinger under the bus after a Game 5 loss to the Edmonton Oilers last week certainly didn’t help his case.
Florida Panthers head coach Paul Maurice, who is good friends with DeBoer, spoke about the firing ahead of Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final.
“He’ll be alright. He’s a good coach,” Maurice said in response to a question from The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun. “I think you get elite teams, you’ve got to push them real hard to get to where they get to, and then at some point you need a summer off, pick your spot. He’s going to be OK.”
DeBoer earned a 149-68-29 regular season record over three campaigns with the Stars, leading the club to the final four all three of his years behind the bench. He also posted a 29-27 record in 56 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
