Bangerz was a complete 180 from the image fans were so used to. While I’d say the songs were bangers on their own, it was her provocative image that received criticism from some OG fans. Now, Miley Cyrus is opening up about how that era affected her personally, causing trouble back home and in her love life.
How Miley Cyrus’ relationship with her family suffered because of Bangerz
Whether she was swinging naked on a wrecking ball or creating pop culture moments with We Can’t Stop, 2013 era Miley Cyrus was a vibe. Sure, she wasn’t for everyone, but there are still a ton of people who love how she completely wiped off her goody-two-shoes Disney Channel image and started fresh. Of course, with little praise came a lot of backlash.
Cyrus recently appeared on Monica Lewinsky’s Reclaiming podcast, where she got candid about how the Bangerz era affected her personal life and put a strain on the relationships she had with her family members.
Talking about the criticism surrounding her moves back then, the More to Lose singer stated, “That was the time where I just got hit so hard, and I was so embarrassed.”
She then opened up about how her actions led to her siblings feeling humiliated to be related to her, too embarrassed to go to school, even. In her words,
There was even a time where my brother and sister didn’t want to go to school, because of how humiliated they were to be related to me. I remember even, you know, my brother at one point, he was saying, ‘I don’t judge you but you could understand how whard it is for me to go to school and you be my sister.
Cyrus has a total of five siblings: Braison, Noah, half-sister Brandi, and half-brothers Trace and Christopher.
Apart from the sibling guilt, she also felt guilty as a daughter and found it “really hard” for her to go home and look her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, in the eyes “and not feel super embarrassed.” Then there was her grandmother, who she says was her best friend. She remembers thinking at the time, “Oh god, this is going to kill her.”
While 2013 introduced a new Miley Cyrus to the world, one that seemed super confident on the outside, only she knows what went on behind the scenes when she had to go home and face the consequences of what she had been doing.
Miley Cyrus had a difficult time dating
During the conversation, Cyrus stated that everything was just too difficult to deal with at that point in her life. While her career was soaring, she admitted that she “lost everything” in her personal life because of her professional choices.
She said, “It was really hard for me in 2013, and I lost everything during that time in my personal life because of the choices I was making professionally, you know, if I kept dressing or acting a certain way.”
Due to this, her relationships suffered, and no one wanted to date her. According to her experience, no one wanted to be with a woman who was so s*xually expressive out in the open.
Cyrus stated,
My relationships fell apart. No one wanted to date me because they didn’t want to be with a woman that s*xual expression part was not for them, it was like shared with the world.
Cyrus added that her romantic relationships and her engagement didn’t work out at that time because she was sharing a part of herself with the world that men “wanted to be saved for them only.”
From posing n*de for photos to dancing in provocative clothes, Cyrus stated that all of it made men feel like she was taking something intimate away from them, which is why she had a tough time finding someone to date.
Today, she is in a happy relationship with musician Maxx Morando, whom she has been dating since 2021. Her career is soaring high, and she is once again on good terms with her father.
