Nightreign Director on One Gameplay Element They Took from Miyazaki’s Elden Ring: “We wanted to keep and transfer” That Into the Spinoff

Elden Ring Nightreign might look like its predecessor to all, but it isn’t the same. If you’ve played the game, you’ll know how different it is compared to Hidetaka Miyazaki’s take. That was the point while creating the roguelike-focused game, while respecting the original idea.

However, Junya Ishizaki didn’t want to make it feel too different. By keeping the visual aesthetics and game gameplay elements the same, he did manage to do the Elden Ring justice. However, there’s one particular thing that was carried over to Ishizaki’s take. That’s why we’re here today, so let’s not waste time, shall we?

Elden Ring Nightreign might be a different game, but Ishizaki wanted to keep one element intact

There’s no doubt Elden Ring Nightreign has reused assets from older games, but they had a good reason. But Junya Ishizaki was meant to do that to build upon Elden Ring and give it a multiplayer twist. However, he didn’t want to undo everything Miyazaki added in the open-world soulslike game.

We found a CNET interview where Junya Ishizaki specified what he carried over to his spin on the franchise. You may have realised that Elden Ring Nightreign is similar when it comes to character growth and RPG mechanics. This is exactly what Ishizaki wanted to keep, even though he was creating something different.

While it’s not limited to Elden Ring, with a lot of our games, we keep this sense of exploring the world and traversing the world. Building on these RPG systems and growing your character was definitely an element of Elden Ring that we wanted to keep and transfer into Nightreign.

Epic boss battles are something we FromSoft fans love and adore. The same is true for Junya Ishizaki. However, since he was doing things differently, he wanted to bring his own vision into them. By that, he meant making boss battles feel epic and unique to Elden Ring Nightreign.

Boss battles are still a large part of Elden Ring — but … we had to deliver something new for Nightreign. We wanted these large-scale boss battles to feel really epic and really unique to this game.

However, it wasn’t all Junya Ishizaki’s credit, as he had a credible team that was dedicated to making their game special. All in all, it did work out for them, as they created something familiar yet different. Glad they kept the special elements from Elden Ring, as it really shows what has changed and what hasn’t.

Nightreign keeps some ideas from Elden Ring, but the rest of it is a part of the glorious evolution

We all know about the dynamic map of Elden Ring Nightreign. However, the initial idea was completely different. Instead of making procedurally generated maps, Ishizaki’s team wanted to create various maps that would be triggered during each playthrough. However, they switched gears and planned to bake it into a single map.

At one point, there was the idea to have different maps — specific set maps for when you play each session. At one point, we had the idea to try to collapse this into a single map, and instead have these different layers and transformative changes that occur during that session.

Personally speaking, the idea for procedurally generated maps seems like a better idea. A lot can be built upon it if future updates are considered. FromSoftware has always added new layers of challenges with their DLCs, maybe the same would be planned for Elden Ring Nightreign as well.

What do you think FromSoftware will do after this point? Will they add more gameplay improvements or give additional bosses to improve the experience? Share your thoughts in the comments below, we’d love to hear your speculations.
