Ever since My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has been streaming, the opinion of fans about the spin-offs has changed in a major way. Many also believe that My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has the power to surpass the original series because of the elements embedded within the story.
From creating a more ground-level tone to focusing on different aspects of a superhero world, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes does a brilliant job everywhere. However, there is one place where the series is lacking, and it is one of the most classic Shonen elements.
This element is the flashiness of a superhero society, which makes them stand out. My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is lacking the flashiness of its characters, and it has slowly become noticeable, which might not be good.
The dark tone in Vigilantes is heavier than My Hero Academia
When My Hero Academia: Vigilantes started, it was automatically established that the series was going to have a bleak portrayal because of the story revolving around Vigilantes. While the narrative is still heavy on the slice-of-life elements, whenever a dramatic twist emerges, it changes the entire tone of the story, making it more thrilling and frightening.

From Stendhal’s character to Kuin’s development as a villain in the series, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has exceeded itself in terms of embedding darkness into the plot. This has also resulted in other aspects, like character introductions or dramatic twists, losing their shine. It was made clear from the start that My Hero Academia: Vigilantes would focus on the different side of the hero world, and it definitely did.
Compared to My Hero Academia, the spin-off prequel is much darker, and this adds suspense to the story. Thus, fans often return for more, and as of yet, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes hasn’t disappointed yet. Not only that, following the ongoing storyline, it is safe to say that the narrative is only going to get even more menacing from here on.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes needs a little flashiness
As mentioned above, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is quite bleak, and it is only going to get even darker from here on. However, this might not be a good thing after all, as the story might lose the essence of a superhero world, which is more or less the main theme of the story. Thus, in order to maintain a better portrayal, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes needs to embed a little flashiness.
While My Hero Academia: Vigilantes does use flashiness, it is generally a mocking tool to highlight heroes like Captain Celebrity.

Thus, it does not have the same impact as it had with characters like All Might in the original My Hero Academia series, which made them stand out and establish their place as superheroes within their universe.

Although it is understandable that My Hero Academia: Vigilantes wants to focus on the Vigilante part of the superhero world, it could still use a little sparkle. After all, a little flashiness to highlight characters like Koichi and Pop Step won’t hurt anyone. It would help them enhance their development within the plot in multiple ways. For example, their introductions or entrances will become more noticeable. Also, it will make them stand out and help them develop a presence as the main characters of the story.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is currently available to watch on Crunchyroll.
