Matt Smith’s ‘House of the Dragon’ Remark Is Terrible News That Might Make George R.R. Martin Flip Out

We’ve already had enough plot and character deviations in House of the Dragon to welcome another one. In fact, Matt Smith’s response to a popular theory about his character, the dashing Daemon Targaryen, is quite concerning. His arc in Season 2 already went off-track, spending almost the entirety of the show in Harrenhal.

During his overstay there, viewers saw Daemon placing his hand upon a weirwood tree and started experiencing visions of the future, including Daenerys Targaryen, the White Walkers, and Brynden Rivers or Bloodraven, aka the Three-Eyed Raven.

Season 2 of House of the Dragon endured criticism from fans not only because of its underwhelming finale but also Daemon’s long-winded storyline in Harrenhal. If there’s one interesting thing about his whole stay in that crumbling castle, it’s the strange visions.

In one of his hallucinations, he saw the Bloodraven, which we’re already familiar with, thanks to Game of Thrones. From that scene, fans started coming up with theories that Daemon is the Three-Eyed Raven, basically the original one.

While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, the cast of the prequel saga answered and reacted to fan theories, with Matt Smith loving the idea of turning his character into the show’s Three-Eyed Raven.

Interesting. I hope so. Good one. I like that. We’ll have that. Yes. Affirmative.

In short, the actor is very eager to go in this direction, and based on his initial reaction, this was the first time he’s heard of the theory. Since he has already received his scripts, we could deduce that anything similar to this theory has not come up in the writer’s draft.

If this plays out, it would be another huge deviation from the main plot, giving Daemon another responsibility that does not concern the Dance of the Dragons or, at least, the upcoming battles in Season 3.

George R.R. Martin has been very critical of Season 2, penning a long rant targeting the major changes that completely rewrote the history of Westeros. The upcoming installment should be a chance to get back on the right track. Dedicating time and resources to exploring Daemon’s transformation as the Three-Eyed Raven might compromise other significant events that we need to see, those that are related to the fight between the Blacks and the Greens.

With Martin profusely expressing his love for Daemon, this potential segue in the character’s arc would absolutely drive him nuts. We know he’s a morally gray character with a very complex and unpredictable nature, and we’ve seen him almost switch sides in Season 2, which totally caught us off guard. It’s effective because it’s grounded in reality.

The showrunner previously revealed there will be unexpected episodes and scenes that weren’t based on the source material, and it’s quite worrying already. The author warned fans about the possible “butterfly effect” of these changes, which evidently will show the symptoms in the upcoming seasons.

House of the Dragon is currently available to watch on Max.
