Jon Voight’s Plans to Save a Dying Hollywood: Did Donald Trump Take His Advice?

Donald Trump supporter Jon Voight had plans to revitalize the dying Hollywood industry. Voight was among the three actors Trump chose to be his ambassadors to Hollywood, alongside Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone. Voight issued a statement in May, sharing that he had presented a proposal to the President.

The statement also suggested that the White House was considering his proposal at the time. Voight’s statement came a day after Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff on movies produced outside of the United States. It appears that both Voight’s suggestions and the implementation of tariffs are under consideration currently.

Angelina Jolie’s father, Jon Voight, claims to have a comprehensive plan to save Hollywood. He issued a statement on May 6, 2025, that he had presented his proposal to the White House, which included measures to revitalize the movie industry. An ardent supporter of President Donald Trump, Voight shared that Trump will help “make Hollywood great again.”

According to Business Insider, Voight’s proposal included suggestions to roll out federal tax incentives. It also suggested changes to the tax code and co-productive treaties with foreign countries. Voight’s plan also suggested handing out infrastructure subsidies to cinema owners and production companies.

Regarding tariff impositions, Voight’s proposal recommended the imposition of tariffs in “certain limited circumstances” only. His plan also called for a “focus on job training” in the industry. Voight and his manager, Steve Paul, claimed in the statement that the White House was reviewing their proposal. The Mission: Impossible actor shared:

We look forward to working with the administration, the unions, studios, and streamers to help form a plan to keep our industry healthy and bring more productions back to America

Voight made the recommendations as the President’s ambassador to Hollywood. In January, Trumo announced the appointment of Voight, Mel Gibson, and Sylvester Stallone as his Hollywood ambassadors. He shared at the time:

They will serve as Special Envoys to me for the purpose of bringing Hollywood, which has lost much business over the last four years to Foreign Countries, BACK—BIGGER, BETTER, AND STRONGER THAN EVER BEFORE!

He added that he will bring about “The Golden Age of Hollywood” with the help of these three talented people. The White House has yet to make any policy implementations on Voight’s recommendations.

Donald Trump announced a 100% tariff for movies produced outside of the United States on May 5, 2025. In his announcement via Truth Social, Trump shared that the tariff was intended to save the movie industry in America. Many movie studios weren’t happy with the announcement, as some of the major productions are currently operating outside of the U.S.

Trump went on to claim that the movies being produced outside the country is a threat to national security. He ordered the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to impose a 100% tariff on “any and all Movies coming into our Country that are produced in Foreign Lands.” He added, “WE WANT MOVIES MADE IN AMERICA, AGAIN!”

Trump’s announced tariffs were unclear on many aspects. But they posed a major concern for movie studios. All the big studios producing movies have branches outside of the United States. Due to the exorbitant movie-making costs in the country, most of them prefer to take their production outside the country.

The tariffs are yet to be implemented. He later shared that he was asking film studios whether they’re happy with the decision. He shared, “So we are going to meet with the industry. I want to make sure they are happy with it because we are all about jobs” (via CNN).

Democratic Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, welcomed Trump’s tariff policy. He earlier proposed the increase of California’s Film & Television Tax Credit Program from $330 million to $750 million yearly. It aims to incentivize production houses to stay in California.
