“It could have been a disaster”: ‘Dandadan’ Co-Director Reveals His Favorite Scene of Season 2

Yukinobu Tatsu’s Dandadan is once again returning this year with a second season, and the series is ready to rule the anime industry once again. As fans know, the upcoming season will follow the Evil Eye arc, which sees Jiji being possessed by the Evil Eye yokai and then battling against Momo and Okarun, the series’ protagonists.

What’s more exciting is that the first three episodes of Dandadan season 2 got a special theatrical release on June 6, 2025, and it is only going to boost the fame of the franchise. With season 2 just around the corner, the co-director of the series, Abel Gongora, recently revealed his favorite scene in the upcoming installment of Dandadan.

He explains the complexities faced while creating the scene and their significance within the Dandadan storyline. Not only that, he even pointed out his favorite episode, which, according to him, will be the best episode of the series, and fans will thoroughly enjoy it.

Abel Gongora’s favorite scene was very complex

In a recent interview with Collider, Gongora was asked about the second season of Dandadan and his process while working on the anime series. In addition to that, he asked about which was the most troubling scene from the upcoming season. He pointed out that the scene revolving around Jiji turning into the Evil Eye was the most complex scene, and it was, in fact, his favorite scene from Dandadan season 2.

Gongora stated:

For the moment, I’d say when Jiji transforms into Evil Eye. We wanted to try new things and make it cool, but because it’s a little bit artistic, it could have been a disaster. So we needed to be careful. I think it turned out looking cool, and we achieved what we wanted, so I’m pretty happy with it. But yeah, it was really challenging.

According to the Dandadan co-director, the design of Jiji’s Evil Eye transformation is so artistic that it makes it difficult to adapt. He explained that they wanted to try new things with it to make it cool, but it could have very well been a disaster.

Gongora pointed out that they very carefully worked on the scene and, in the end, were happy with the results. What made it even more satisfying was the challenge that it brought for the creators, and hopefully, fans will also love this transformation in Dandadan.

Abel Gongora’s favorite episode also revolves around this scene

While further talking about what could be the greatest scene of Dandadan season 2, the co-director of the series disclosed that the episode that contains the iconic transformation of Jiji into the Evil Eye is episode 2. Thus, by extension, it is his favorite episode in the upcoming season. He even pointed out the other aspects of the episode that he liked.

Gongora stated:

Connected to what I was saying, it would be that episode: the transformation. So it’s the second episode. I really like the background with the houses and how it’s built. This tower of houses and everything looks very cool and a little bit illogical, because the houses aren’t horizontal; they’re at every angle possible. And then having Jiji struggling and going down the stairs, Momo is also following… I thought, ‘That’s really cool.’

Gongora revealed that the second episode is the most special episode of Dandadan season 2 because it explores the artistic elements of the manga. The episode involves uncanny scenes that revolve around strange backgrounds and unique interactions between Momo, Okarun, and Jiji.

Dandadan season 2 will be a special one because the Evil Eye arc is a fan-favorite storyline from the manga. Plus, the fact that fans are getting a chance to see the first three episodes in theatres makes it even more exciting and will enhance the experience of the upcoming Dandadan season.

Dandadan season 2 will be available to watch on Crunchyroll from July 3.
