Hideo Kojima Has Revealed the One Thing That Could Kill His Own Studio, and It’s Shockingly On Brand

Hideo Kojima has a huge place in all of our hearts for the weird yet striking projects he delivered to the gaming community. This one specific part of Kojima cannot be replicated, as minds are different for all. Not only can others not replicate it, but Kojima’s own team can’t pull it off, and he is aware of that.

A while ago, we learned that Kojima left his “will” on a USB drive, which contains all his ideas for the future. Even though that’s the case, he doesn’t want the team to try to become him, as it could threaten the business. Moreover, he doesn’t want his production to keep on creating sequels; rather, he wants to move on and push unique projects.

Hideo Kojima believes following in his footsteps could run his production house out of business

Games by Hideo Kojima could be startling at first, but the weirdness slowly grows on you over time. That’s what happened with his Metal Gear titles, and Death Stranding as well. Furthermore, it won’t be stopping soon as Xbox exclusive OD and Physint are in the pipeline. And there’s no denying, we are super anticipated to take a look at them.

However, in case of unlike events, we might not get to see a game which Hideo Kojima had in mind. Life and death are uncertain, and Kojima understands every bit of it; thus, the contingency plan with the USB drive. While that’s the case, he doesn’t want his weirdness to be copied, even though he inspired many. He grazed through this topic with GQ Magazine during a talk session.

I am not going to pass the baton to anyone. I will rather crush the baton… [Laughs.] I don’t need to give “Hideo Kojima” to anyone. If I pass the baton to my staff and tell them to make things the same way I do, the company will not succeed and will go out of business.

It’s evident Kojima doesn’t want people to exactly like him, but he does appreciate that he inspired many. It’s not like Kojima didn’t find inspiration from others, but he didn’t follow in their footsteps. In his case, it was comic book artists from his early days.

Every individual is different, and Kojima hasn’t passed the “baton” officially in any way possible. But inspiration doesn’t require an official passing ceremony. Instead, people can follow their own “fire” and lead the way. That’s how Kojima wishes to keep his studio and legacy alive.

Kojima wants to finish Physint before reaching his late 60s

Hideo Kojima always had us captivated with his weird ideas, and still doing so with Death Stranding 2. However, that won’t be the end as he wants to finish Physint before reaching his late 60s. So, we can expect that game to release sometime in 2030. He shared his thoughts on aging during the same interview.

I go to the museums almost every weekend. And you see, like [he imitates a brushstroke with a flick of his hand] a brush. I could do that when I’m 90. But with games, you kind of have to burn your brains out. How old will I be after I finish Physint? Late sixties? I haven’t really said anything about the future projects – I do have ideas – but I’m thinking I should direct a film after Physint because I’ll be too old in the future.

Looks like Kojima already has his retirement plans in motion, but he doesn’t want to give up on his artistic nature. If not games, he might become a film director, as he’s an avid fan of films. You can see him being vocal about film on X every now and then.

Honestly, we all would love to see his weird works on screen someday, but that isn’t arriving soon. But again, we do know Death Stranding is getting multiple adaptations, which will be based on his works. So, technically, we are that far off anyway.
