Fans of Guillermo del Toro will be pleased to know that his upcoming movie, Frankenstein, is getting a well-deserved ‘R’ rating. His adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel is one of the highly anticipated titles this year, and it’s only fitting that the director did not cut back on the elements of gore.
Del Toro is very well-known in the realm of gothic horror, and this is not his first foray into producing an R-rated movie. In fact, it’s a tradition he has kept over the years, with only some titles bearing a PG rating.
Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is officially rated R

There is no other way to tell the story of Frankenstein without brutality, so fans should rejoice that Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming project has been granted an R rating for “bloody violence and grisly images”, as per Film Ratings.
The long-gestating movie is finally coming to life this November, although it has not received a specific release date. Starring Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the creature, Frankenstein will deliver a powerful storyline leaning more on the emotional aspects than pure horror.

Del Toro previously revealed that his version is not a horror movie per se, but a tale exploring what it means to be a father and a son. It is also the most personal film he’s ever done in his career, as evident in the years he has dedicated to perfecting it. There is a reason why it has taken him this long to adapt the novel, and it’s totally okay because a carefully crafted masterpiece requires time and effort to make.
In late May, Netflix unveiled the first official trailer, giving the audience a glimpse of what the creature looked like. The clip boasted stunning set design and haunting visuals reminiscent of del Toro’s past works, such as Crimson Peak.
It’s important to note that the Mexican filmmaker isn’t attempting to make a faithful adaptation of the novel. Del Toro usually tells stories in a way that haunts people’s dreams, especially because most of his works are deeply rooted in his own life experiences and personal traumas.
How did Frankenstein land an R rating?

There is so much work that goes behind a movie landing an R rating. We don’t know how del Toro did it this time, but in 2015, he revealed he managed to make the board give Crimson Peak an R rating by giving up “all his back end, all his points” (via IndieWire).
Based on that, fans could speculate that he did the same thing for Frankenstein, although it was evident from the get-go that there’s no other rating better suited for this story other than a restricted viewing.
There’s also the director’s lucrative deal with Netflix to thank for, as the contract finally allowed him to realize his passion project. The movie is getting a theatrical release soon, so fans should watch out for that.
Frankenstein will be released on Netflix in November 2025.
