Former NFL Player Antonio Brown Wanted on Attempted Murder Charge

Former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown is wanted for attempted murder after allegedly stealing a security guard’s gun and using it to try and kill a man outside a celebrity boxing match in Miami last month.

The warrant shows a charge of attempted murder with a firearm, the Washington Post reported on Thursday, June 12. It orders Brown to post a $10,000 bond and remain on house arrest until trial.

Footage of Brown from that night went viral in the days that followed when videos posted to social media appeared to show the former Pittsburgh Steeler fighting with several people at the event. In the video, Brown appeared to be holding a pistol and shots could be heard off camera, so it is not certain where they came from.

The warrant states that security tried to break up the fight, and amid the scuffle, Brown allegedly ripped the gun from one of the guards.

Miami police said at the time that officers responded to the altercation after receiving an alert from the gunshot-detection system ShotSpotter. No arrests were made and no injuries were reported. Police temporarily detained Brown before releasing him.

Though the warrant reportedly says Brown was unarmed when he was detained, witnesses allege that the seven-time Pro Bowler was the shooter. Two shell casings were found at the scene.

Brown addressed the incident the next day via social media.

“I was jumped by multiple individuals who tried to steal my jewelry and cause physical harm to me,” he wrote on May 17. “Contrary to some video circulating, Police temporarily detained me until they received my side of the story and then released me. I WENT HOME THAT NIGHT AND WAS NOT ARRESTED. I will be talking to my legal council and attorneys on pressing charges on the individuals that jumped me.”

The warrant identifies the man Brown allegedly shot at as Zül-Qarnaįn Nantambu.

“Several other individuals began attacking Mr. Nantambu, escalating the situation to three individuals against one,” the warrant reads, per TMZ.

Nantambu also claimed that Brown “began to run toward him with a firearm.”

“Cell phone video obtained from social media showed Mr. Brown with the firearm in his hand advancing towards Mr. Nantambu on the outside sidewalk,” police said in the warrant. “The video captures two shots which occur as Mr. Brown is within several feet of Mr. Nantambu. The video also captures Mr. Nantambu ducking after the first shot is heard.”

Nantambu later said in a police interview that Brown shot at him during the altercation and a bullet may have grazed his neck. He had “visible injuries,” according to the warrant.

The incident was far from Brown’s first run-in with police. He previously faced allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied, and in 2020, he pleaded no contest to a felony burglary with battery charge after he allegedly attacked a moving truck driver at his home. In 2022, he was arrested but did not face charges after a woman accused him of throwing a shoe at her during an argument.
