Emily Rudd’s Favorite Anime Is Also the Only One That Made Me Cry Again and Again

Emily Rudd is the actress of Nami in Netflix’s One Piece live-action. After finding out her favorite anime, I do not doubt that she is the most suited to play the brave-hearted Straw Hat member. To be honest, she is stronger than most otakus because her favorite anime is actually Made in Abyss, yes, the same anime that has traumatized an entire generation of otakus.

Made in Abyss might have chibi characters and a cutesy poster, but under no circumstances can it be called fluffy. The series has dark and complex themes and is one of the few anime that has made me cry multiple times.

Emily Rudd exposes her inner daredevil with her favorite anime

Emily Rudd appeared on Netflix’s interview series called Growing Up Geeked, which is currently streaming on YouTube. During the interview, Rudd revealed that One Piece is the type of series that she grew up on. However, it’s not her favorite. Instead, her favorite is Made in Abyss, as revealed in an interview by Collider.

My favorite anime is called Made in Abyss, but I love Demon Slayer, JJK, Tokyo Ghoul. I’ve watched too many to name them all…But yeah, Made in Abyss I would say is my top.

Rudd’s choice is surprising because while most people go for typical Shonen battle series or the occasional Shoujo or comedy series, she chose a series that has become a nightmare for many. Don’t get me wrong, Made in Abyss is a wonderful series, but in a ‘it will leave you with dried tears’ kind of way. The animation and music are top-notch, and the entire team deserves awards, but they also need to be asked if they are okay.

Made in Abyss is one of the few anime that could break me in a way that felt completely indescribable. It was atrocious to watch children suffer so much, and the deaths were nothing if not cruel. The twists were not exciting; they were horrifying, and I had to watch a lot of scenes through the gaps of my fingers.

Made in Abyss is not for the weak-hearted

Made in Abyss isn’t a particularly gore-filled series; in fact, Attack on Titan has much more gore than the former. But the lack of gore does not mean Made in Abyss is easy going; it’s filled with disturbing scenes of graphic injury. If anything, it makes the twists and turns even more horrifying. People might not be ripped in half, but the emotional impact of the scenes is simply too much.

The series starts as any other fantasy series and focuses on Riko, who is in search of her mother. She lives in a massive Abyss that people try to explore, and it runs deep into the center of the Earth. She is a mere 12-year-old girl, and she is pushed into severe atrocities. The orphanage she lives in punished her by tying her limbs and suspending her from a rope.

This completely unnecessary yet strangely impactful scene is just the beginning of what follows next. The entire series is full of controversial stuff, and the children’s characters are often injured so badly that I can’t help but turn away from the screen, trying to pull back the acid rising up my throat.

Made in Abyss is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
