‘Dandadan’ Breaking Its Own Box Office Record Is a Sign the Anime Deserves an Actual Movie

Shattering all expectations, Dandadan: Evil Eye has finally been released in North American theaters on June 6th. While its previous movie, First Encounters, was already a global hit, this new prologue screening for Season 2 far and beyond surpassed that, ranking 8th on the domestic box office with a staggering $3 million gross revenue.

Fans knew what they were coming for and exactly got that with Studio Science SARU’s absolutely gorgeous animation. Now, following its exemplary success, there’s a possibility for a standalone movie for this beloved franchise. If such episodic compilations are already doing this great in theaters, you can imagine how fans would absolutely lose their minds if they release a whole movie!

A Dandadan standalone movie would be worth all the hype

Both Dandadan movies that we’ve got so far are basically compilations of the initial few episodes of each season, strictly speaking, around the first 3 episodes. Even then, both movies have had a successful run in global theaters. Now, this is not exactly common for such compilation movies of other series.

Usually, what happens is that fans know that they’re eventually going to watch the whole thing anyway in episodic format once the anime officially gets released. So, they often show reluctance to spend money on theaters when they can see it sitting on their couch after a little wait.

But that didn’t stop Dandadan fans from going to the theaters. The hype for Season 2 was too much to keep in. So, if the Dandadan production team decides to make a whole movie, completely separate from the seasonal episodes, while also making it canon, it has the potential to create history!

What made Evil Eye’s theatrical premiere such a grand success

Fans couldn’t resist the lucrative opportunity to behold the spectacular that Dandadan is, days before other people will. For those who get to experience it, this would certainly sound like a flex to the ones missing it to watch in theaters. Plus, they will also be missing out on the whole theater experience.

Science SARU’s stunning, flowy animation is a major reason the movie becomes several times more enjoyable on the big screen. Which is why Evil Eye’s success in theaters apparently makes much sense, knowing how epic it must feel watching it on the grand screen with fellow Dandadan fans.

At the time of the release of First Encounters, the anime wasn’t even out, so a big portion of the current fandom didn’t know what they were in for. But still, thanks to the open publicity the manga readers had previously done, it was a success.

But in the case of Evil Eye, everyone knew the stakes would be insane after that cliffhanger at the end of Season 1. So naturally, people had pre-built hype going into the theaters, and certainly the numbers of its revenue suggest it was a grand success for the industry.

Now, if the studio can capitalize on this success and proceed to make a standalone Dandadan movie before Season 3’s release, it can potentially shatter all theatrical anime release records ever made.
