Therarest coincurrently in active circulation is His MajestyKing CharlesIII’s 50p coin, depicting the Atlantic Salmon, with just 200,0000 of the coins back in 2023.
Following close behind, the Kew Gardens 50p, released in 2009, is the second rarest coin, with 210,000 in active circulation.
The highly sought-after collectable, which features the Kew Gardens pagoda, recently caused a storm on eBay, with a 25 bid showdown resulting in one of the rare coins being sold for £157, which is over 300 times its value.
It is worth checking your piggy bank and sorting through any spare change for the coin, as it could end up earning you enough for a posh meal or a flight abroad.
However, the Royal Mint warned that the coin may be tricky to find in your purse, as they are often snapped up by collectors.
“Nothing gets people excited quite like this original 2009 design”, it said.
“Just 210,000 were released into circulation and with almost all of them in private hands, the chances of coming across one in your change are slim.”
It added: “The venerable institution depicted on the Kew Gardens 50p coin is the nation’s most famous royal botanical garden.
“The reverse design, created by Christopher Le Brun RA, features the famous Chinese Pagoda at Kew with a decorative leafy climber twining in and around the tower.
“Demand for the 50p denomination was not high at the time of release into circulation which explains the low mintage of this particular design.”
The Atlantic Salmon 50p is also a highly sought-after collector’s item, and often sells for huge sums on eBay.
Last week, an Atlantic Salmon coin sold oneBayfor a whopping £69, after a fierce 16 bid showdown.
On October 7 one coin sold for £164 with six bidders fighting for the prize.
Most rare and valuable 50p coins
WE reveal the Royal Mint’s most rare and valuable 50p coins in circulation.
Triathlon
Minted in 2011, the Triathlon 50p depicts the same sport which featured in the 2012 Olympics.
There are more than 1,160,000 of the coins in circulation.
With over 200million 50ps circulating in the UK, that makes this coin quite a rare find.
The highest recent sale we’ve found on eBay recently was £30 on June 21.
Judo
Judo is a popular sport that involves grappling with your opponent.
But despite the design, it’s not so easy to get a hold of this coin, of which there are just 1,161,500 in circulation.
The piece was designed by David Cornell after he won a national competition.
It was minted in 2011 and the highest bid we’ve seen on eBay was for £17.95 on June 21.
Wrestling
Wrestling was one of the first Olympic sports so it’s not surprising that it features on one of the 50p pieces.
The 2011 coin was designed by Roderick Enriquez, a graphic designer from Hammersmith, London.
We’ve seen it sell for as much as £15 online so is worth digging around for.
In recent months, one was sold on eBay for £11.95 on June 18.
Football
Of all the coins created to commemorate the 2012 Olympic Games, the 50p Football is among the rarest.
It features an explanation of the controversial offside rule on it, with 1,125,000 produced.
One sold for £20 on eBay on June 11, although it has been known to go for as much as £75 in the past.
Kew Gardens
The Kew Gardens 50p is the rarest of all the 50p pieces, with only 210,000 in circulation.
They have been known to sell for as much as £895 on eBay before.
The design was created by Christopher Le Brun RA and features the famous Chinese Pagoda with a leafy chamber that twists around the tower.
The coin often sparks the interest of new coin collectors due to its rarity.
The highest sale we found in recent weeks was £142 on June 22 with 23 bids.
Another sold for £147 on December 16 with a whopping 37 bids.

In a new interview, Kirsty, who turned 49 earlier this year, used the opportunity to share how much it annoys her when she is talked about in this way.
Reflecting on her age, she told Top Sante magazine “I don’t know how on earth I’m 49. I just think, ‘Where did my 30s go?’.
“I can barely remember them because they were manic, and I was working full-time with two kids.
“I got divorced in my late 30s and ended up finding life hard for a few years, and then suddenly, you get to this age and wonder how you got here.”
But Kirsty added: “One of the best things about being this age is you’re wiser and you know yourself better.”
However, there is one thing about getting older and looking good that annoys her.
“It p***es me off and upsets me when people say I look ‘amazing for 49’,” she vented.
“Am I meant to look like a granny instead? I’ve never understood that.
“I know people don’t mean it in a nasty way, but age is age.
“No one knows what age anyone is anymore because we all have healthier lives and live longer.”
Kirsty added: “I just think instead of saying, ‘Oh gosh, you look great for 49’, just say, ‘You look great! How do you do that?’.
“And I’ll tell you that I eat healthily and I look after myself. You know what I mean? Let’s just stop nitpicking about age.”
Kirsty revealed how she keeps her well honed body in shape: “It’s very important I eat well to fuel my workouts.
“Protein is so crucial, so it’s a difficult one as an animal lover.
“I’ve been a vegetarian off and on all my life, but I think being a vegetarian makes me quite unwell sometimes, so eating meat is sort of one of those things where I’ve always gone back and forth, purely for my health.”
Continuing, the healthy star said: “I eat quite a lot of fish and, occasionally, have some red meat.
“But if I didn’t need to eat meat, I wouldn’t.
“For me, it’s all about buying meat responsibly now, because my boyfriend and children eat meat, and I certainly wouldn’t stop others from doing so.”

“We met in September 2023, so it’s coming up to two years.

“I liked his aura and his charisma. Then I got to know him and he’s brilliant.
“He asked me out in Paris – Gabby and I were on the Eurostar, giggling like schoolgirls.
“I was there when she met Kenny, too. Isn’t it wonderful that our friendship is still going strong?”
Kirsty also discovered on the trip that there was a slight age difference between her and Darren.
“Yes, he’s 10 years younger,” she said. “It’s hilarious.
“I heard him talking and he mentioned his age and I thought: ‘Oh, god, I really fancy him, but maybe there’s too many years difference.’
“He didn’t know what age I was either. But then it was like ‘bang’ and it didn’t matter.”

Meet Vimy Aykroyd, racing royalty, rebel and the owner of 5-1 chance Pride Of Arras.
At stake is the small matter of £900,000 for victory, a place in history and a lucrative, money-spinning career at stud for their three-year-old colt.
But also the realisation of a dream that started 26 years ago when Vimy first sent horses to trainer Ralph Beckett.
Their families are intertwined, with Vimy having spent time with the Becketts growing up.
When Ralph, son of trainer William, started his own yard in 1999, Vimy – Lavinia for full – was one of the first to send him horses.
In the years since Beckett has pretty much done it all.
Millions upon millions in prize money, Arc de Triomphe victory with Bluestocking last year, Group 1s galore and Royal Ascot success.
But he’s never won the Derby.
Over the past decade, the 1m4f race over the undulating, rolling Epsom track has been a happy hunting ground for the billionaire tycoons who dominate the sport.
Since 2017 it has been won by either Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed – under his Godolphin operation – or the all-conquering Coolmore group, made up of Irish racing boss John Magnier and British former bookies Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith.
Only in 2017, with Desert Crown, did it go to someone else – Dubai businessman Saeed Suhail.
In fact, you have to go to diamond dealer Anthony Oppenheimer in 2015 for the last sole British owner to win the Derby, when he did it with Golden Horn.
It’s a tough gig when you’re literally battling those with the financial might of an entire country behind them.
But Vimy’s more than used to overcoming adversity.

PRIDE OF ARRAS absolutely can win the Derby.
It may not have been a vintage Dante he won at York last time but Ralph Beckett’s colt showed real class to get the job done.
He really enjoyed stepping up to 1m2f and screams that he’ll love the Derby distance too.
There is lots of stamina in his pedigree but no shortage of speed either.
It was good to see him accelerate once getting a gap on the Knavesmire and the Dante winning time was decent too.
That was just his second run – and it came after nine months off – so you would expect a lot more from this talented colt.
Beckett knows what it takes to win at the highest level and there is still some 5-1 about which looks an each-way bet to nothing.
I would be surprised if he was outside the first three in the big race.
Mischievous by nature, she wasn’t always the best student and racing was in her blood given her grandad won the Grand National in 1891.
When women were allowed to ride in Flat races for the first time in 1972 she naturally took part and won on a horse called Old Cock.
Personal life took over when she moved to Spain with husband Richard Aykroyd – but he died from cancer in 1997.
Vimy returned to London and then Yorkshire, where she married her late husband’s brother David, who has been described as ‘the epitome of the English gentleman’.
Sadly, the Telegraph report that he is now in a care home with dementia and unaware their beloved horse is running in the world’s most famous Flat race.
Pride Of Arras was 50-1 for the Derby before he won the Dante at York – the key trial for the Epsom contest – last month.
Beckett was bullish of his chances in the big one immediately after and there is no doubt he is the big British hope this year.
A fairytale story, victory and overcoming odds? Sounds like Vimy Aykroyd all over.
