‘I just cried & wanted to go home’ – Stephen Bradley opens up on painful moment during son’s Leukemia battle

STEPHEN Bradley “just cried and wanted to go home” as he came to terms with his son’s Leukemia diagnosis while in Bulgaria for a Shamrock Rovers match.

Josh Bradley, 11, has been undergoing treatment for over three and a half years.

Hoops boss Stephen and wife Emma sat down with Off the Ball to discuss the ordeal they’ve been through as a family over that span.

The one-time Arsenal academy prospect outlined how helpless they felt at times since there was only so much they could do for Josh.

He emphasized: “Your job as a parent is to protect your kids at all costs but at that moment, you can’t do that and you feel like you’ve let them down.”

The 40-year-old then cited a moment while on the road with his team that ended up in an outpouring of emotion for him over the phone to Emma.

He recalled: “I remember going to Bulgaria to play Ludogorets a short time after Josh had got diagnosed. I remember calling Emma the day of the game and just crying.

“I just cried and wanted to go home, I didn’t want to be there. Sometimes you just feel that you’re in the wrong place.

“Emotionally you’re just not there, and I spent an hour on the phone crying to Emma, saying I want to be at home.”

Football has at least provided some solace to Stephen, Emma, Josh and their two other children Jaden and Ella over the course of Josh’s health battle that began in 2022.

The four-in-a-low League of Ireland chief got to give Josh the honour of being the first person to lift the trophy at the culmination of the 2021/2022 season.

On the value that that day held for Josh, Stephen continued: “The day he lifted the trophy, he was just out of the hospital.

“He was so sick at that time but all he was talking about was the game on Friday night and being there.

“I remember taking him down to the theatre and all he could talk about was ‘Am I going to the game on Friday?’

“When Josh got sick, I asked the players to give us that night for him, to give him that distraction.

“They were incredible, they stepped up for him, going on to win the league, and giving Josh that moment that we will never forget.”

As regards their advice to any parents placed into a similar nightmare scenario, Stephen and Emma shared the same view on the best approach to take.

Stephen initially said: ‘The way to do it is to face it head on.

“You have to have anger at the start, you do feel sorry for yourself, you have all those emotions. But very quickly you do have to face it head on.”

Agreeing with that thought, Emma tacked on: “It was three and a half years, so you couldn’t live angry every day.”

THE HISTORY OF DUNNES STORES

DUNNES Stores opened its first store on Patrick Street in Cork in 1944 - and it was an instant hit.

Shoppers from all over the city rushed to the store to snap up quality clothing at pre-war prices in Ireland’s first ‘shopping frenzy’.

During the excitement, a window was forced in and the police had to be called to help control the crowds hoping to bag founder Ben Dunne’s ‘Better Value’ bargains.

Dunnes later opened more stores in the 1950s and began to sell groceries in 1960 – starting with apples and oranges.

The retailer said: “Fruit was expensive at the time and Ben Dunne yet again offered Better Value than anyone else in town.

“Over time, our food selection has grown and that spirit of good value has remained strong.

“Now we offer a wide range of carefully-sourced foods from both local Irish suppliers and overseas.”

The retailer’s first Dublin store opened its doors in 1957 on Henry Street and a super store on South Great Georges Street was unveiled in 1960.

They added: “In 1971, our first Northern Irish store opened, and many others soon followed.

“Expansion continued in the 1980s in Spain, and later into Scotland and England.”

Dunnes now has 142 stores and employs 15,000 people.

Taking to social media, Lisa shared a video where she was seen revealing her timeless figure in a tiny bikini.

She was seen dressed in a red and white thong bikini, with matching shorts and floaty coverall.

Lisa was then seen showing off her body in different angles and she twirled for the camera.

Fans went wild in the comments section, with many quick to swoon over how ageless Lisa looks, and how toned her body is.

“Gorgeous!!! And obsessed with the matching shorts!” penned one person underneath the selection of snaps.

“Wow! You are so stunning Lisa! And fit & healthy – inspiring,” added a second.

A third then penned: “You look absolutely gorgeous! It’s like you are aging backwards.”

“Stunning and the best moves,” said a fourth.

STAYING SHAPE

Lisa previously spoke candidly about losing weight when she took to social media to share how she had shed the pounds.

“You know I’ve really tried to get the weight off these last few years. Well, longer than that, four or five years,” the TV star said last year.

“And I’m so proud of all the work that I’ve done and my willpower. Not drinking all the time. It’s really helped me.

“But it’s weird how many followers I lose when I post something like that, for us ladies as inspiration and also because I am proud.

“And I shouldn’t feel bad about that,” she said of receiving backlash for talking about weight loss in the past.

At the time, fans were quick to support the brunette beauty, with one writing: “You are one of many role models for me.

“We are the same age and lucky to have some kick ass women like Tamsin Outhwaite, Davina, Tess and Claudia, Denise etc etc all going through perimenopause and still fabulous.

“Which really isn’t easy when you don’t feel like yourself. Exercise and self care is so key and you look incredible.”

Meanwhile, Lisa has been engaged since 2016 to her “soulmate” George.

The stunning star famously dated another George – the one and only Mr Clooney – back in the early noughties.

City shopping centre to be demolished to make way for science lab, gym & hotel – and shoppers despair ‘it’s a sad sight’

A POPULAR shopping centre is set to be demolished in a major UK city.

The Grafton Centre in Cambridge housed just 11 retailers after years of decline.

It will be replaced by science laboratories, a hotel and a gym[/caption]

Built in 1983, the shopping hub has undergone significant changes in the 40 years since it was built.

An expansion took place in the 1990s, in addition to a recent refurbishment in 2017.

Despite attempts to revive the struggling centre, Cambridge City Council approved plans to partially demolish the building in February 2024.

Led by the Pioneer Group, the demolished site will be replaced by science laboratories, plus a hotel and a gym.

It hopes to be a more productive use of the space, as the shopping centre had become run down with lots of empty units.

Over the last few years retailers like Debenhams, River Island and New Look all closed down their Grafton-Centre sites, leaving it feeling increasingly empty.

Shoppers told Cambridgeshire Live that they were “sad” to see the shopping centre so empty.

Maddy Richer said: “It’s just sad because this is in the centre of Cambridge.

“I suppose it is good for the science industry but I don’t know if it has to be right in the centre of Cambridge.”

Locals expressed frustration that the redevelopment plan has taken so long, with the centre lying mostly empty for two years.

Families in the area expressed concern that the science-focused redevelopment will leave the area with fewer activities for children.

Kim High told the local newspaper: “It used to be a great place for families to do activities.

“Things like that we will miss because there is not much else to do.

“I think Cambridge is just gearing towards science and not families.”

With just 11 retailers left in the store, some locals said that they “don’t think it is good publicity for Cambridge” and they would rather the space be put to better use.

Vue has announced they will be closing this summer[/caption]

The latest business to announce its departure from the store is cinema chain Vue, who will close this summer.

The closure comes as high streets up and down the country struggle to cope with the decline in footfall since Covid.

With many retailers moving online, shopping centres have seen retailers closing stores, leaving them empty and derelict.

This becomes unattractive for customers, further reducing footfall and leaving councils looking for an alternative use for these vast spaces.

With its university population and appeal for young people, the new development could provide exciting research and job opportunities.

It does, however, mark the end of a historic building once-beloved by families for its wide range of shops and entertainment options.
