Major blow as ANOTHER popular Ryanair flight to top destination scrapped as busy season kicks off

RYANAIR has scrapped flights to another popular European destination over “sky-high” charges.

The Irish airline has decided to stop all flights from Maastricht Airport in the Netherlands due to rising aviation costs.

Starting October 26, Ryanair will cancel every route it operates from Maastricht due to the airport’s high fees and the country’s increasing aviation taxes.

They have said Maastricht is one of the most pricey airports in Europe, and the charges could harm air travel connections in the Netherlands.

Back in 2021, Maastricht introduced an environmental tax that charges Ryanair with nearly €30 for each passenger flying out.

And this tax has been in place in other major European hotspots.

This has led Ryanair to also cut the number of flights – including those to Alicante, Bari, Girona, Porto, and Zadar which wipes out around 150,000 seats each year.

Jason McGuinness, Ryanair’s Chief Commercial Officer said the taxes at Maastricht have skyrocketed by 275 percent in just four years.

He said: “Ryanair continues to grow traffic – this year from 200m to 206m – by offering unbeatable low fares to customers across Europe at airports that have low access costs.

“Maastricht’s sky-high costs are damaging its connectivity.

“It is evidenced by the Airport’s failure to recover its traffic post-Covid, lagging far behind the rest of Europe at just 50 per cent of pre-Covid traffic in 2024.”

Earlier this year, the budget airline trimmed summer flights in Spain by 18 per cent, cutting 800,000 seats and a dozen routes.

Similarly, the airline pulled all flights to and from Aalborg after Denmark introduced a €6.70 passenger fee, which airlines are required to cover.

Ryanair called the tax “harmful” and said it forced them to scrap flights to major Danish airports like Aalborg and Billund.

This move means Ryanair is losing around 1.7 million seats and closing several routes in Denmark.

And back in September 2023, they pulled 17 routes for the winter season, blaming a 45 per cent hike in passenger charges at Dublin Airport.

They also moved their special eco-friendly “Gamechanger” planes to other airports that offer better deals.

Then in September 2024, Ryanair said it would cut another 14 routes due to a passenger cap at Dublin Airport, which only allows 32 million travellers a year.

Some of the routes cut included places like Asturias, Castellón, and Santiago in Spain, plus airports in Denmark, the UK, France, Italy, Austria, Slovakia, Germany, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Romania and Poland.

ROUTES CUT

And just this week, Ryanair decided to suspend its flights to Tel Aviv due to ongoing security concerns and instability in the region.

The airline had briefly resumed operations in the past month, but recent security issues due to the war in Gaza have made the service too unreliable.

CEO Michael O’Leary stated that safety remains the top priority and that conditions in the area no longer support regular flight operations.

He said: “I think we’re running out of patience too with Israel… flights to and from Tel Aviv.

“If they’re going to keep being disrupted by these security disruptions, frankly, we’d be better off sending those aircraft somewhere else in Europe.”

Lee Mack had asked the remaining contestants: “Based on the results shown here, which of these sports teams is the best?”

The screen showed various final game scores for a selection of fictional teams.

Available options included A) Breezers, B) All Stars, C) Flames or D) Gems.

Once the 30 second time limit was up, it was revealed 11 people had chosen the wrong team.

The correct answer was Breezers, who had successfully won all of their games.

Lee then proceeded to turn his attention to eliminated player Zainab.

Having asked what she answered, the contestant replied: “I put All Stars.

“I didn’t even look at the numbers. I just thought, ‘Oh, All Stars. They just seem like the best name.'”

Lee responded: “Whoa, you didn’t just go with what you thought was the best name?”

As she nodded to confirm, Lee asked: “What did you think all the numbers were for?”

Zainab explained: “I don’t know – I don’t watch football or anything like that.”

To which Lee remarked: “They’re not real teams! And it’s not even football, it says sport.”

In another episode, a contestant branded herself “thick” after getting an easy picture question wrong.

The players had been asked: “Which of these Vincent van Gogh self-portraits has been altered?”

Players had just 30 seconds to examine three photos of the famous painter and pick out the correct answer.

The answer turned out to be C – as this featured the legendary Dutch artist wearing earbuds, which weren’t invented for another 100-years after his death in 1890.

The faked image also played on the fact Van Gogh infamously also cut off one of his ears during a furious row with artist Paul Gaugin.

After revealing four people got it wrong, Lee turned his attention to one of these players – Margaret.

The 1% Club's Most Difficult Questions

The 1% Club sees 100 contestants try and make it to the 1% question and be in with a chance to win a share of the jackpot. Here are just some of the show's most difficult teasers.

  • Players had to compare and contrast three images of butterflies then explain which of the butterflies were exactly the same on both sides. Find the image and answer here.
  • Players were shown groups of six symbols then asked which were in the same order whether you read them from left to right or right to left. Find the image and answer here.
  • Players were asked how many different combinations were there of displaying four digits on one hand. Find the answer here.
  • Peter had recently found his old diary that he’d written in secret code but he couldn’t remember how to decipher what he wrote. Players were asked to crack the code and find out what the bold word was. WH89 I GR1W UP I WA92 21 B8 A 5L1RI72. Find the image and answer here.
  • A 1% question was based on a grid of numbers going in ascending order from 1 to 49.  Starting on 25, the middle square, SEEN took you to square 27. From there, NEW took you to 20. From there, which square would SEWN take you to? Find the image and the answer here.

“Thick as two short planks”, Margaret quipped after the spotlight was put on her.

The contestant revealed she’d initially chosen C as her answer – only to change her mind.

When asked by Lee for her reasons behind changing, Margaret replied: “God alone knows, I don’t.”

The 1% Club airs on ITV1 and ITVX.

Iconic 80s rocker shows support for Irish rappers Kneecap as ‘good friend’ shares brew at band’s cafe during Dublin trip

PAUL Weller has doubled down on his support for Kneecap by sharing a cuppa with them in the capital.

Last month, the Modfather was one of 40 acts who signed an open letter opposing what they claim were efforts to censor the trio due to politically charged statements made during performances.

However, jetting into Dublin this week, the 67-year-old went one step further by sharing a cuppa with the Belfast rappers at Phibsborough’s Bang Bang Cafe last Thursday night.

An insider told The Irish Sun: “Paul was over in Dublin working on another project but wanted to meet up with Kneecap.

“He’s a good friend and Kneecap were able to thank Paul for all his support over a brew.”

The Belfast musicians were celebrating with Paul and Kneecap manager Daniel Lambert after their Irish language film scooped the top prize at the Celtic Media Awards.

Set in west Belfast, the film tells the story of how fate brought bandmembers, Mo Chara, DJ Provaí and Moglai Bap together to “change the sound of Irish music forever”.

The self-titled movie was awarded the Spirit of the Festival at the celebration of media throughout the Celtic nations and regions.

Kneecap look set to play one of the biggest dates in their career to 12,500 punters at London’s Wembley Arena next September 18.

Their popularity is continuing to grow as member Mo Chara faces an impending court case on June 18 after allegedly displaying a flag in support of proscribed organisation Hezbollah at a London gig.

In a statement posted on social media, Kneecap said: “We deny this ‘offence’ and will vehemently defend ourselves.”

Kneecap were cancelled from the TRNSMT concert lineup in Glasgow, which they were due to play in July, due to safety concerns from UK police according to the festival, despite having played the city numerous times previously.

Meanwhile, Glastonbury have confirmed band will not be cancelled from the festival and have put the group on a larger slot on the Saturday afternoon at West Holts Stage.

Paul Weller, Primal Scream, and DJ Annie Mac were among the big names to sign an open letter supporting the group last month which denounced the alleged attempts to suppress the band’s artistic expression.

It urged a stance against political interference in artistic freedom at festivals and gigs, emphasizing the stance that true censorship lies in ignoring global humanitarian crises, such as the situation in Gaza.

BAND BACKLASH

Kneecap was criticised after graphics saying “F*** Israel” were displayed at the Coachella festival in California.

Videos were then unearthed of a band member appearing to shout “Up Hamas” and “kill your local MP”.

The band issued an apology to the families of the murdered MPs Sir David Amess and Jo Cox.

The members said their “message has always been and remains — one of love, inclusion and hope”.

They have previously denied supporting Hezbollah or Hamas.
