Boston Blue Cast Marcus Scribner’s Ethnicity and Family: How Did He Make His Hollywood Debut?

CBS is aiming for some really cool dramatic entertainment this year, for it is set to return to the screens with the upcoming police procedural drama TV show, Boston Blue. A spin-off of Blue Bloods, this series already has a lot of buzz surrounding it, though one of its cast members seems to be getting considerable attention: Marcus Scribner.

In a story focused on the characters of Danny Reagan (played by Donnie Wahlberg) and Lena Silver (played by Sonequa Martin), both of whom are members of the Boston Police Department, Scribner plays the role of Jonah Silver, a confident rookie cop. Here’s all we know about the actor’s ethnicity, family, and debut in Hollywood.

An American actor born and raised in Los Angeles, California, Marcus Scribner, 25, is the son of Troy Scribner. He also has a sister named Athena and a dog named Zeus, and his name is evidently derived from Roman and Greek mythology. While not much is known about his specific ethnicity, he is known to be of African-American descent.

Per Teen Vogue, the star’s father is Black while his mother is biracial, i.e. African American and White – just like his onscreen character Andre “Junior” Johnson in the comedy series Black-ish. On the one hand, while Scribner’s father’s family is from Los Angeles, his maternal grandmother is from England (see Los Angeles Daily News).

For one who began acting at only seven years of age after falling in love with it (via iaam.com), Scribner started playing the clarinet as well, in fifth grade (per Entertainment Weekly). That’s not all, for, as it turns out, he is also a sports-gamer boy, enjoying both sports like basketball and lacrosse as well as video games (according to BCK Online).

At the age of 10, Marcus Scribner made his Hollywood debut through a guest role in a 2010 episode of the television show Castle. Soon after, he graced the screens with his presence in episodes of Fox’s New Girl, TBS’ Wedding Band, and even Nickelodeon’s Wendell & Vinnie. A few years later, he finally found his breakthrough role.

When he was 13, he first auditioned for the role of Andre Johnson Jr. in the ABC sitcom Black-ish, and ended up beating Anthony Anderson’s (Andre “Dre” Johnson” in the series) own son Nathan for the role (per Nylon). By the time he was 14, the pilot of the same was shot, and this part turned out to be Scribner’s breakthrough in the industry.

For his outstanding portrayal of Junior in the first season of the sitcom, Scribner earned an NAACP Image Award nod for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy. That seems to be the push he needed for recognition, for by 2015, he was already bagging roles that continue to make him a household name in Hollywood.

To date, he has starred in numerous projects including The Good Dinosaur (Buck’s voice), Alexander IRL (Darius), Confessional (Garrett), The F**k-It List (Clint), Farewell Amor (DJ), Ron’s Gone Wrong (Alex’s voice), Along for the Ride (Wallace), How to Blow Up a Pipeline (Shawn)—which was, notably, his first live-action film with a wide release in theatres, and How I Learned to Fly (Daniel Davis).

In TV too, he has played both major and minor roles in pieces like American Dad! (a moviegoer’s voice), Home: Adventures with Tip & Oh (Smudge), She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (Bow), Mixed-ish and Grown-ish (Junior), Dragons: The Nine Realms (D’Angelo Baker), and Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures (Bell Zettifar).

Since then, Marcus Scribner has established a fair name, having earned nods for Young Artist Awards’ Outstanding Young Ensemble Cast in a TV Series, and Best Performance in a TV Series – Leading Teen Actor, as well as wins for the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Performance by a Youth and Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, proving to be a worthy rising star in Hollywood.

That said, fans might as well brace themselves to watch him give an equally splendid performance in the upcoming Boston Blue as well!

Boston Blue is set to premiere on CBS in the fall of 2025.
