Beat-Em-Up Fans Are Eating Like Kings After Scott Pilgrim EX and Marvel Cosmic Invasion

Summer Games Fest 2025 finally had its big reveals yesterday, and this time around, there was a big focus on indie teams and/or small-scale developers. There was also a segment dedicated to fighting games, and we had the usual heavy hitters like Street Fighter 6, along with a few indie beat-em-ups such as Scott Pilgrim EX and Marvel Cosmic Invasion.

Indeed, it is a great time to be a beat ’em up enjoyer, and SGF 2025 seems like it has had every trick up its sleeve to appease fans. More on these two games and their intricacies below.

Marvel Cosmic Invasion releases later this year

Marvel’s Cosmic Invasion is a classic, retro beat ’em up game featuring a ton of playable characters from Marvel Comics. Players can choose between a total of 15 Marvel heroes and partake in glorious side-scrolling battles.

Guest appearances include the likes of Spider-Man, Venom, the X-Men, and She-Hulk. The game is being produced by both Tribute Games and Dotemu, in a never-before-seen collaboration with Marvel Games.

As expected, the game features intricate combos, movesets, and dynamic gameplay, which are all interwoven with gorgeous pixel art. Players must defeat Annihilus from destroying the galaxy, in an adventure that will take them into the depths of the Negative Zone.

Interestingly, Marvel’s Cosmic Invasion also features two exclusive additions that should make the game quite the grand time indeed. These include the Cosmic Swap Tag-Team System, which allows for team-based combos and super moves, along with built-in support for both online and local co-op multiplayer.

The game will be released across multiple platforms sometime later this year, but we don’t have a proper release date just yet.

Scott Pilgrim EX looks like a classic Beat-Em-Up from Tribute Games

Scott Pilgrim EX is a side-scrolling, beat ‘em up based on the Scott Pilgrim series of books and the movie adaptation. The game takes heavy inspiration from other games of its genre, and comes equipped with pixel art-themed goodness.

Scott Pilgrim EX features seven playable characters, including Scott Pilgrim and Ramona Flowers. Each character has a unique move set and plays very differently.

The game also features an original story by series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley that aims to both ease newcomers into the game and offer a few sneaky additions for long-time fans.

Other noteworthy additions include the return of Anamanaguchi and a revamped power-up system that can be used to fine-tune your battle prowess further. For the uninitiated, Anamanaguchi is best known for their renditions of 8-bit rock in game OSTs.

Scott Pilgrim EX also supports up to four-player co-op, with options for both local and online modes and easy drop-in/drop-out functionality.

The game will be released sometime later in 2026, so it might be a while before players can delve into the hilarious world of Scott Pilgrim again.
