Apex Legends Better Watch Out, Splitgate 2’s Battle Royale Is Here to Throw Hands

The latest Splitgate 2 was well worth the wait, as the developers, 1047 Games, have introduced a new battle royale mode. It was definitely not on our 2025 bingo cards, especially when this category is already stacked with popular titles like Call of Duty, PUBG, and Apex Legends. Well, according to the CEO of 1047 Games, we needed a game that could revive the craze for the battle royale genre again.

As shown in the launch trailer, the new battle royale looks like Apex Legends, but with portals. While the concept seems intriguing at first glance, we may get one of this year’s best FPS games, courtesy of Splitgate 2.

Splitgate 2 unveils portal-powered battle royale mode

During the Summer Game Fest 2025, the Founder/CEO of 1047 Games, Ian Proulx, surprised the fans by adding a battle royale mode to the action-packed Splitgate 2. While it was a complete shocker, it got a decent reaction from the audience. According to Proulx, the current state of FPS games isn’t that great. So to revive it, his team created the new battle royale, with portals being their uniqueness. Adding to it, he said:

With the help of our amazing community, we’ve not built Splitgate 2. Why? Because I grew up playing Halo, and I’m tired of playing the same Call of Duty game every year. And I wish we could have Titanfall 3

The developers are clearly looking forward to experimenting with the fusion of battle royale mode with portals. It’s one of those features that makes this game stand out from its competitors, like Apex Legends. You must be wondering what’s so special about portals. Well, it’s what justifies the identity of Splitgate.

The portals in this game aren’t like ordinary ones that only take you a few meters away. They are the gateway to a different biome, where you can loot, find players to kill, or camp until the enemy shows up. Speaking of which, there are five different biomes with unique terrains, climates, environments, etc.

No matter what biome you step foot in, make sure to use the battle-ready weapons, upgrades, and power-ups to claim victory.

Below, we have listed all the essential things you must know before starting your journey in the battle royale mode:

  • The battle royale consists of 60 players and 15 teams. A maximum of four players can be onboard at a time.
  • At the beginning of a match, you and your team will be traveling in a ship, just like Call of Duty Warzone. You can then decide where to land by aiming and gliding in that direction.
  • You will start the game with a basic pistol. New weapons can then be found by looting chests, Air Drops, and player pods left by a dead enemy.
  • As you kill enemies, you will earn Credits that can be spent to earn weapons and upgrades at a Buy Station.
  • With every minute passing, the ring will begin to shrink. Make sure to stay within the ring or you will lose health.
  • A fellow teammate can revive any downed player from your team.
  • Keep an eye on in-game events like Portal EMP and Air Drop Frenzy. Here’s what they do:
    • Portal EMP Event: Temporarily disables a portal, forcing you to travel on your own.
    • Air Drop Frenzy: Increases the frequency of Air Drops in an area.

While Apex Legends introduced parkour, Fortnite introduced crafting, and now it’s time for a new contender, Splitgate 2, to introduce portals and take over this genre. Long story short, all the battle royales should take notes, as there’s a new player in town.

Splitgate 2 is currently out and you can play it for free on PS4, PS5, Xbox Series S|X, and PC via Steam and Epic Games.
