‘All areas at risk’ – Met Eireann ’embedded thunderstorms’ alert as exact day of storm & worst-hit spots pinpointed

UNPREDICTABLE weather is set to culminate in ferocious thunderstorms starting tomorrow, according to weather experts.

Ireland will be covered in low hanging cloud for almost a week – and Met Eireann warned thunderstorms be embedded in cloud layers or concealed by haze.

The weather is set to take a turn on Wednesday – and could last until at least Friday.

Meteorologist Cathal Nolan of Ireland’s Weather Channel said “all areas are at risk”, but some spots look more likely that others to experience disruption.

He said: “Our main focus weather wise this week has to be the period from Wednesday evening through Thursday, and again over the weekend where there’s increasing confidence in the risk of some strong thunderstorms developing across the country.

“These storms have the potential to cause some local disruption.

“By Wednesday, Ireland will lie under a south to southeasterly airflow, with a shallow low pressure to our southwest steering up areas of increased instability from the Bay of Biscay.

“The combination of warm surface temperatures, high CAPE figures, favourable shear, and cooler upper air temperatures will lead to the development of thunderstorms.”

Nolan explained that, although all areas are at risk, Leinster and east Ulster are likely to be worst-hit on Wednesday night.

The risk is “more widespread” over the coming weekend, although some areas which have yet to be pinpointed won’t be affected.

Nolan outlined lightning, spot flooding, hail and gusty winds, and localised power disruption as some of the risks of the weather conditions.

Met Eireann confirmed the thunderstorm alert for tomorrow following a dull day today.

A drizzly, misty morning is set to give way to bright and sunny spells as the afternoon goes on.

Temperatures will be between 16C to 19C with light southwest breezes before mostly dry weather tonight with some mist and fog in southern areas.

But tomorrow, the weather experts predicted a start to thunderstorms.

SHOWERS & THUNDER

Met Eireann said: “Some bright or sunny spells on Wednesday at first.

“Becoming cloudy with scattered showers developing, turning heavy and thundery during the evening.

“Humid with highest temperatures of 16C to 20C in a moderate southerly breeze.”

Wednesday night is predicted to bring more showers and thunderstorms.

And temperatures are expected to sit around 15C through the night.

Thursday will see a continuation of showers and thunderstorms.

Met Eireann said: “Showery conditions, some heavy with embedded thunderstorms, mild and humid too.”

STORM RISKS

These are the risks to be aware of in a thunderstorm:

  • Spot flooding
  • Lightning strikes
  • Hail and gusty winds
  • Localised power outages

Met Eireann predicted: “Showery outbreaks of rain will persist with further thundery heavy falls, especially across northern and eastern areas.

“Some sunny spells in places too.

“Warm and humid with highest temperatures of 18 to 22 degrees, in a moderate to fresh southeasterly wind.”

Friday is expected to bring heavy showers and southerly winds, with temperatures between 17C and 21C.

And low pressure is in place for the coming weekend with a showery day forecast for Saturday.
