Sunday Lawn Care Review: Do These Non-Toxic Alternatives Actually Work?

One thing I learned as soon as I became a homeowner is that maintaining a lawn during the summer takes up just about all of your free weekend time. Add in things like juggling soccer practices and playground dates, and entertaining your kids while they’re home for the summer, and lawn care quickly falls to the bottom of the priority list. To help make the entire process easier and quicker, people often turn to products to help get the job done. Unfortunately, a lot of those products contain harsh and toxic chemicals that can have adverse side effects for kids, adults, and pets. We all want that lush, green yard where our families can safely play, but traditional lawn care often comes with a laundry list of ingredients we can’t even pronounce, let alone feel comfortable having kids and pets roll around in.

That’s where Sunday steps in with their refreshingly different approach to low-maintenance lawn care. Instead of harsh chemicals, Sunday uses non-toxic ingredients like seaweed, nitrogen, potassium, and iron. I recently put four of their lawn care products to the test: Dandelion Doom, Weed Warrior, Pet Lawn Grass Seed, and their Weed and Green combo fertilizer. While some performed better than others, what impressed me the most was finally finding lawn care products that let me stop second-guessing every outdoor family moment.

Let’s dive into the specifics.

Pet Lawn Grass Seed (2-Pack)

Sunday’s Pet Lawn Premium Grass Seed is a urine-resistant blend that features a combination of tetraploid perennial ryegrass and tall fescues to help ensure your lawn withstands pet-related wear and tear while recovering from urine damage.

I have a big Bernese mountain dog, and as much as I love him, he kind of wreaks havoc on my backyard. There are a few problem areas in my backyard: the first being pet urine spots, and the second being a patch near my fence that my dog has chosen to constantly dig, leaving it pretty much a bare patch of dirt. I tried this grass seed in both places, and while I didn’t see much growth in the urine patches, the bare patch of dirt he created near the fence grew beautifully.

You do need to water the grass seed twice a day, which can be a bit of a time commitment. I also used stakes and tape to keep him away from the area while the grass grew, but after just a few weeks and lots of watering, the whole area that used to be dirt is now filled with lush, green grass. I’m not giving up on the urine patches yet, I am still watering them and hoping they’ll pick up speed soon.

Weed Warrior Weed & Grass Killer Spot Treatment

Weed Warrior Spot Treatment uses organic herbicidal soap in a convenient spray bottle format – no mixing required. This fast-acting, non-selective formula kills weeds, grasses, moss, and algae in as little as 20 minutes.

This was by far my favorite product from Sunday. I used this in garden beds and around my fire pit, and in some garden beds in the front. The product worked quickly and efficiently. The only downside is that the weeds to grow back pretty quickly. But the spray bottle is so easy and convenient to use that just a few sprays per week keep those pesky weeds at bay. Here’s a before and after of one of the flower beds I used the spray on.

Weed & Green Pre-emergent and Post-Emergent Weed Killer

Sunday’s Weed & Green uses an iron (FeHEDTA) formula that greens up your lawn while preventing crabgrass and broadleaf weeds like dandelions from germinating in early spring.

I was pretty pleased with the results of this one! While my lawn isn’t loaded with weeds, I did see a reduction one the number of weeds popping up and my lawn was noticeably greener and more lush looking.

Dandelion Doom Weed Killer Concentrate

$30 $44 32% off

Dandelion Doom weed killer uses an iron-based weed control in a convenient hose attachment. It claims to target individual weeds or small problem areas throughout your lawn.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have much luck with this one. I used it on a large section on the side of my house that is pretty overrun with weeds. The hose attachment is easy to use and really convenient, but I didn’t see any reduction in the weeds. As you can see in the picture below, the weeds on the left-hand side of the side garden are still growing pretty strong. I do want to try using the weed warrior on this area soon to see if I get better results.

At the end of the day, Sunday isn’t promising overnight miracles or an Instagram-perfect by next weekend, and honestly, I appreciate that about them. They’re offering something more valuable: peace of mind. Yes, you might need a little more patience or trial and error compared to the heavy-duty chemical options, but when your toddler inevitably faceplants in the grass or your dog decides the freshly treated lawn suddenly looks like the perfect spot for an afternoon nap, you won’t have to worry.
