“I hated him for it”: George Clooney Is a Fan of Noah Wyle’s ‘The Pitt’ but He Hasn’t Forgotten the ‘ER’ Humbling

George Clooney is one of the biggest stars in the world now, but he got his break in the TV business. He had his breakthrough with the medical drama ER, where he played the charming Dr. Doug Ross, and received two Primetime Emmy nominations for his performance in the role.

One of his co-stars on ER was actor Noah Wyle, who is now the star of another emergency room-based medical drama called The Pitt. The HBO Max show has been the breakout hit of the year due to its high-stakes premise and real-time structure, and has already been renewed for a second season. Clooney appreciated Wyle and the show.

George Clooney’s role as the sweet-talking doctor Doug Ross in ER made him a household name and opened many doors for him as an actor and as a star. He has now made his name as one of the biggest stars in the business and has won Oscars as both an actor and a producer. But his ER days are still brought up.

He was recently asked about his ER co-star Noah Wyle, who headlines another medical drama on HBO Max called The Pitt. Set in the emergency room of a hospital, The Pitt just saw an incredibly rated first season, appreciated for its tense atmosphere, real-time setting, and performances from the ensemble cast.

Clooney was appreciative of his former co-star. Though his own days in the emergency room are far behind him, the Syriana star praised The Pitt and Noah Wyle when he appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers. He said,

Have you guys seen that show? It’s so good…We’ve been really dear friends since [ER], since we did the pilot. He’s just the most honorable young man—I get to say, because I’m an old man. And I cannot be happier for his success on this show. The show is just a beautiful show. He does a great job with it.

Noah Wyle’s The Pitt has been renewed for a second season after a widely appreciated first season, with many praising its inclusion of topical events in the storylines. The show’s real-time structure, with each episode representing one hour in the 15-hour shift, was highly appreciated.

George Clooney said he hated Noah Wyle on ER because he did one thing better than the star

Since his ER days, George Clooney has done many things. He has been an activist, he has performed in politically charged films, musicals, heist films, and even made his Broadway debut recently with Good Night, and Good Luck. However, the one thing that he always found difficult was the medical jargon on ER.

Clooney recounted several instances where the show, which was famous for its walk-and-talk style of dialogue, would have long lines of medical jargon, and he would ruin multiple takes because he could not get it right.

The Pitt’s Noah Wyle, reportedly, did not have any such issues. Clooney jokingly said,

He never had any trouble. He always could do it, and I hated him for it. People should hate Noah.

Noah Wyle’s experience in ER with medical jargon has certainly come in handy with this year’s The Pitt, as he had to return to the emergency room setting as a chief attending physician.

The Pitt is available to stream on HBO Max.
