The perfect rating of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Rotten Tomatoes would give anyone the impression that the series is a must-watch, which is true, only if you’re someone who can handle heartbreak in its purest forms. Now, what does that entail? The show hits you with tragic events and their unbearable aftermath.
It leaves a scar and you feel helpless while everything that could go wrong does go wrong. But a sequel can potentially fix all that damage, right? No, wrong! A sequel can never heal the hurt of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or live up to the complete experience. That’s why it should never happen, yet somehow the fandom always finds itself discussing the likelihood of one.
A sequel can never undo or heal the hurt of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners premiered on Netflix in 2022 and has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes (at the time of writing of this article). From the looks of it, the anime looks like an upbeat, visually stunning anime with cool characters. Something that would leave you bobbing your head to the cool music.
The anime is all of that, and more. The cast of characters consists of some of the most vulnerable and imperfect individuals ever. Their chemistry with one another is great, but short-lived. The action sequences, the shared moments of trust, supposed betrayal, and fleeting joy lead them to the worst heartbreak.

There are many more anime that might be far more gruesome and graphic, but nothing comes close to how Cyberpunk: Edgerunners leaves you emotionally devastated. A Reddit comment captures this sentiment extremely well.

It’s heartbreaking to see the characters’ conclusion, but your heart aches more for the ones left behind. You see a dream that was years in the making, losing its meaning because of how the characters grew close to one another. The last episode leaves you hopeless and hurting, making you introspect about the importance of love and the fragile concept that life is.
How can a series like that be continued without overwriting the melancholic experience or outright ruining it? It’ll be hard to surpass it, and just undoing all of that hurt will be extremely cruel after the pain fans have gone through. A sequel is probably the worst thing that can follow Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, but maybe it’s a very real possibility.

Most believe that it’s better to continue the anime in different ways than with a direct sequel. The first season concluded perfectly, and it shouldn’t be tampered with. However, a sequel will inevitably pique fans’ attention.

Last year, a prequel comic centred around Rebecca and Pilar was released, and that was a great way to continue the story. It was a prequel that didn’t meddle with the story of the anime. Hopefully, the announcements at the expo will protect the legacy of the anime, rather than putting it at risk.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is currently available to stream on Netflix.
